Chapter 13

“He’ll be fine. He isn’t injured,” I said, holding the phone to my ear as I sat on the gray sofa. “He just needs some time to himself.”

My laptop sat open on the coffee table in front of me. As soon as I finished updating Grandpa, I planned to look for flights to Italy. And in another fifteen minutes, I hoped the frozen pizza in the oven would be done. I wasn’t in the mood for more pizza, but I lacked the energy to fix anything else.

“Where’s he at now?” Grandpa asked.

“He’s cleaning up. He hadn’t bathed in two days.” In current time, he hadn’t since he’d been gone, so it wasn’t a lie. If I had to guess, he probably hadn’t showered while he was on the battlefield either.

“Did he say where he went?” Grandpa asked.

“I’m sure he’ll share everything when he’s ready.”

“Is he saying much?”

“Not really.”

“Hmm… But you got the ring back?”

“Yes, Tristan is shipping it off.”

Grandpa sighed heavily. “Well, I’m glad Ren’s back and he’s safe.”

Fido walked into the room from the hall. Her tail stood straight up. She paused before she continued toward me.

“I’ll take care of him,” I said. “I think he needs some time to figure things out. He knows he shouldn’t have taken the ring.”

“How long do you think he’ll need? I can stop by with some clothes.”

“Don’t worry about it. I don’t think he’ll be staying long, but if he does, I’ll let you know.”

“Should I call his boss?”

“Yeah, but don’t tell him when Ren can return to work. Ren can call and talk to Ronnie. Just let him know Ren is back and he’s safe.”

“Are you going to call his girlfriend?”

“I’ll send her a message in a little bit.”

“Let me know if he needs anything. Tell him I’m not mad at him.”

“I will, Grandpa. Get some rest. We love you.”

“Love you, too. ‘Night, dear.”

“Sleep well.”

I set the cell on the table and then took a deep breath. He had so many questions. Amazingly, I dodged them all quite well.

Fido meowed as she rubbed her cheek on the leg of the coffee table.

“Hey, girl.” I lowered my hand to her level.

She came right to me. My black-and-white feline seemed skittish at times, but I couldn’t blame her. She’d moved homes, had to deal with a zombie, and then various strangers were coming and going during the party. It all had to be stressful for a cat. Hell, it was for me.

I petted her soft fur as she rubbed on my Halloween pajama bottoms with pumpkins, ghosts, and black cats. She lifted her head and gave me that ‘pick me up’ look. Of course, I did and then set her on my lap. Within seconds, she started purring.

“You should sleep with Ren tonight. I think he’d like your company,” I said to her.

She gave me a purring meow. For a few minutes, I relaxed on the sofa, petting her. I hadn’t felt so calm and at peace in a long time.

A knock on the door startled her.
